YuGaCuRe Fundraiser A Gala Event
At Friends of Crown Heights 671 Prospect Place in Brooklyn, 11216
Saturday April 5th at 6:00 pm
On Saturday April 5th, Vincentian born author Trish St.Hill, Belizean born James Lovell and Christine Vernon will be hosting a Gala event at Friends of Crown Heights. This fundraising event is for the purpose of raising funds for the Yurumein Garifuna Culture Retrieval Project in St.Vincent and the Grenadines.
There will be a cocktail hour at 6:00 pm, followed by a viewing of the YuGaCuRe documentary from 2012.
Music by Garifuna musician James Lovell, and Vincentian singers Scorcher and Shashemene Productions Recording Artist Patrick Junior AKA De Minister with a performance of ‘A Day in the life of a Garifuna Woman’ by Sonia Charles will be part of the evening’s entertainment.
The Ambassador and Consul General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Brooklyn Councilman Robert Cornegy will be in attendance. This will be an entertainment packed evening.
Ms. St.Hill was one of a group of six people, from New York, who sponsored a historic Garifuna cultural retrieval workshop, in Yurumein in 2011. Since then YuGaCuRe has sponsored two other workshop events in 2012 and 2013 respectfully, and the program has worked wonders in reviving the Garifuna culture in St.Vincent and the Grenadines. ‘No country is ever strong without preserving their indigenous culture and St.Vincent is no exception. There is nothing wrong in borrowing pieces of other cultures, but there is pride in boosting of something that is uniquely yours,” said St. Hill. She went on further to say “The Garifuna culture would never be around without our brothers and sisters in Central America, so it is always my desire to include and embrace the Garinagu in the diaspora and to celebrate the ‘Oneness’ of our beautiful people and culture.
”Trish urges everyone to come out and support this worthy cause and to be a part of history as Vincentians and diasporal Garifuna unite and celebrate the revival and preservation of their rich heritage.
Trish is curently working on a project with Christine Vernon to cordinate the People’s Garifuna Textbook. The majority of the materials for the textbook was donated by Mr. Clifford Palacio who is a Garifuna from Belize. One of Ms. St. Hill’s most ardent desire is to see the construction of a Garifuna academy name after Garifuna Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer, and a full statue of this extraordinary leader, who died trying to save his people.
“This cultural retrieval project,” said St. Hill, “is a tribute to Chatoyer and would be the backbone of the tourism industry in SVG for years to come. She urges everyone to support this worthy event and enjoy an evening of edutainment.
